Entrepreneur Showcase: Nate Church

At RYZ we interview creative and motivated people who are actively pursuing their dreams. Today we interview Nate Church:

Nate Church is Co-Owner and Founder of On Track Wellness Martial Arts and Fitness. Known as “OTW” by members. He is originally from Franklin, Ohio and graduated from Wright State University. After working for almost 2 decades in logistics, supply chain management and project management he decided to work for himself in fitness and martial arts. His life-long interest in many physical activities and sports along with over 20 years of martial arts made the decision easy.

What was your background before you became an entrepreneur/studio owner?

I worked for several large companies in Ohio in supply chain and logistics and then got relocated to San Diego for an action sports company handling a host of duties.

Was there any defining moment that led you to pursue your current path?

My layoff from the corporate world. I had a side business before. Had taught martial arts most years while working and wanted to run my own studio. I have always stayed busy and wanted to work for myself. I guess it was always there but the lay off pushed me to finally jump.

Tell us a little about some of the projects/works that you have created?

Our martial arts is a unique blend of the styles I have learned over the years as well as my partner Eric. We mix in a lot, are not afraid to push each other or old traditions. We want students to gain skills to help them physically, mentally and emotionally. Our small group fitness gives people 1 on 1 attention at an affordable group rate.

What projects are you working on now?

Our newest focus is our demonstration and competition team for public performances and competitions. It is a lot of fun as it is full of students all ages and ranks.

Who would you say are the people that have influenced you the most?

My original instructor, Greg Morgan in Ohio. He always believed I would run a school. My current Jiu Jitsu Professor Branden Guptill. He is super straight forward and anything you achieve you know you earned.

What are some of the challenges that you have faced and how do you face new challenges?

Starting from scratch was tough. You have to be very creative n standing out from others. You have to have tough skin, flexibility and stamina. I know there is always a solution there. You just have to find it.

What work are you most proud of?

Pushing through the struggle to finally open my own school. A space that allows martial arts, weight training and group fitness all in one location.

Do you have any advice for an aspiring entrepreneur/artist/musician/writer/filmmaker/health practitioner?

Keep pressing forward. Sometimes it seems like a ton of effort for little result. Progress is often slower than you want. Yet, you will look back and see how far you have truly come.
